Staffordshire is landlocked, which sounds like a disadvantage for container delivery and largely is not. Every container in the county has arrived by road regardless, and Staffordshire sits on one of the best-connected stretches of road network in the country: the M6, the M6 Toll and the M42 all pass through or alongside it, and the A50 and A38 cross it. The county is easy to serve. The exception is the north-east corner, where the Staffordshire Moorlands climb into the Peak District and the character changes completely.

Staffordshire has no port and no coastline, so every container delivered here has travelled by road from a coastal terminal — most often Liverpool to the north-west, the Humber ports to the north-east, or the southern deep-sea terminals. This is normal for the Midlands and is already reflected in the delivered price. The county’s compensation is its road position: very little of England is hard to reach from Staffordshire.
Roads into Staffordshire
The M6 runs north to south through the county and carries most traffic; the M6 Toll parallels it around the Birmingham conurbation between Cannock and Coleshill and is a genuine routing choice for hauliers rather than a formality, since it is a paid road. The M42 clips the south-east. The A50 runs east from Stoke towards Derby, the A38 links Burton and Lichfield towards Birmingham, the A5 crosses the south, and the A34 and A500 serve the Potteries. Congestion around the M6 through the West Midlands is the normal constraint; there is no seasonal road closure issue here outside the Moorlands.

Site access in Staffordshire
Most of Staffordshire presents no unusual difficulty — the industrial and urban sites around Stoke, Burton, Tamworth and Cannock are generally reachable, and the farmland in the south and east is served by adequate lanes. The Staffordshire Moorlands are the exception and they are a genuine one: the roads north-east of Leek climb into the Peak District, narrow between drystone walls and steepen, and the constraints there are the same as anywhere in the Peak. The Churnet valley and the moorland fringes need the approach checked before a 40ft unit is committed to a route.

Planning permission in Staffordshire
The northern part of the Staffordshire Moorlands lies inside the Peak District National Park, which is its own planning authority and applies markedly tighter control — this surprises people who think of the Peak District as being in Derbyshire alone. Cannock Chase is a National Landscape covering a large block in the middle of the county. Green Belt runs along the southern edge against the West Midlands conurbation. Elsewhere your district or borough council is the planning authority. As everywhere, a container behind a farm building is a different proposition from one in a front garden.

Staffordshire is close to us and exceptionally well connected by road, so delivery here is normally a question of vehicle availability and site readiness rather than anything geographic. The Moorlands in winter are the one part of the county where the weather is worth planning around.
