Take the full sidewall off a container, replace it with doors, and you change what the box is for. Loading stops happening through a 2.3m (7ft 8in) opening at one end; instead the whole 6.1m (20ft) flank swings clear at once and a forklift sets a pallet down anywhere along it without driving inside. Open side containers exist for loads that will not travel lengthways.

That covers sheet material and long stock that cannot be turned once inside, machinery lifted in from the flank rather than walked down a 2.4m-wide box, and market stock left on display with the doors as the shopfront. Plus the case people forget until delivery day: clearance alongside the container and none behind the end doors.

Seven units, two lengths

The 6.1m units are the more common choice: one-trip as the 20ft full side access container or as a used 20ft open side unit where budget matters more than paintwork. At the longer end everything is high cube at 2.9m (9ft 6in), including a 40ft full side opening one-trip container giving 12.2m of opening plus the extra headroom. Cutting a sidewall out means putting the strength back in around it, so these units are heavier than a plain box of the same length and far less forgiving of an uneven base. On ground that is not level the doors stop lining up, so a firm, load-bearing base is not optional. One-trip units carry 12 months against structural defects and water ingress; cover on the used unit follows the grade it is listed in.
