Description

The whole 40ft flank opens, and so does one 8ft end. What matters most is what is missing: there is no central post in the side opening. A conventional side-door container keeps one, and that single difference leaves the entire 11,836 mm (38 ft 9 in) clear here, letting a forklift set pallets down anywhere along the length in a single pass instead of working around an obstruction. Add the high cube profile and this becomes the specification for loads that are long and tall at once — panels, machinery, racked stock — and that will not go in through an ordinary door.

Dimensions and rating

  • External: 12.19 × 2.44 × 2.90 m (40 ft 0 in × 8 ft 0 in × 9 ft 6 in)
  • Internal: approximately 12.00 × 2.35 × 2.70 m (39 ft 4 in × 7 ft 9 in × 8 ft 10 in)
  • Side opening: 11,836 mm (38 ft 9 in), clear, with no central post
  • End doors: hinged double doors at one 8ft end
  • CSC plated: 24,000 kg (52,911 lb) gross

Build and fittings

  • One-trip condition — a single journey from the manufacturer
  • Cor-Ten steel construction
  • Two locking bars per door at the end; three per door on the side
  • 28 mm (1⅛ in) marine plywood floor on steel cross members
  • Eight vents
  • Steel bunded floor available at additional cost

Why the missing central post matters

Most side-access containers keep a structural post at the midpoint of the opening, because that is the cheap way to preserve the shell’s rigidity. It is invisible on a specification sheet and extremely visible when you are trying to land a 3.5 m panel with a forklift. Removing it means the load path has to be carried elsewhere in the frame, which is why post-free units cost more — and why they are worth it if what you are handling is longer than half the container. If your loads are all pallet-sized, a posted unit will serve you just as well for less.

Options before it ships

A steel bunded floor can be installed at additional cost where liquids are stored, which turns the unit into a side-access containment store without needing a separate bunded shell. Tell us at the order stage rather than after delivery — retrofitting is possible but considerably more expensive.

Delivery, siting and cover

Delivery is free anywhere in the UK, including Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey, and no VAT is added at checkout so the price shown is the total payable. A post-free 40ft side opening puts a real demand on siting: the frame relies on being set true, and nearly 12 m of unsupported door opening is unforgiving of a pad that settles at one corner. Allow a straight approach and firm, level ground along the full length, and keep the whole opening flank clear so the doors reach their stops. Crane or HIAB offload is agreed in writing before delivery. One-trip grade carries 12 months of cover against structural defects and water ingress, and separately you keep 14 days to change your mind under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 and 30 days to reject the goods if they are faulty.

Related units

Prefer the opening split into four operable leaves? That is the 40ft HC open side container with 4 doors. Worth setting next to the 40ft HC full side opening one-trip container as well. Half the length and the same idea gives you the 20ft full side access container. Everything that opens from the flank is listed in open side containers, with the taller shells in high cube containers. Send a postcode and request a delivered quote.
