With no coastline, this region draws containers from whichever gateway the shipping line used. Felixstowe and Southampton dominate on volume, with Liverpool serving some northern routings and Avonmouth occasionally shorter for the south west of the region.
Roads and routes into the West Midlands
The M6, M5, M42, M40 and M54 converge on this region, with the M6 Toll offering a way past the Birmingham box when it is blocked. The A38, A45 and A46 cover the middle of the region and the A49, A5 and A458 run out into Shropshire and towards mid Wales. The practical dividing line is the M5: east of it you are rarely far from a dual carriageway, west of it the lanes narrow quickly.

Site access
Urban Birmingham and the Black Country have the classic constraints — restricted turning space, low bridges and limited kerbside room for an artic and a crane. Rural Shropshire and Herefordshire have the opposite problem: plenty of space, but lanes and gateways that were not built for a 40ft trailer.
A loaded 40ft container arrives on an articulated lorry. In the UK an artic runs to a maximum of 44 tonnes gross and is around 16.5 metres long, so it needs firm, reasonably level ground, room to turn, and space clear of overhead cables and branches for the offload. Planning permission in the West Midlands
Planning control in England sits with your local planning authority. The Shropshire Hills, Malvern Hills, Cannock Chase and Wye Valley National Landscapes (formerly AONBs) cover much of the rural west of the region. In Birmingham, Coventry and the Black Country the more common obstacle is a conservation area or a covenant on an industrial estate rather than a landscape designation.
