For customers in the East Riding or around Immingham and Grimsby, a container may have travelled a remarkably short distance before it reaches them.

Immingham is the UK’s largest port by tonnage handled, and together with Hull, Grimsby and Goole the Humber forms the busiest estuary complex in the country. Goole sits furthest inland, which occasionally makes it useful for West Yorkshire deliveries.
Roads and routes into Yorkshire and the Humber
The M62 runs the full width of the region from Liverpool to Hull, meeting the M1 and the A1(M) in West Yorkshire and the M18 and M180 on the way to Doncaster, Scunthorpe and the Humber ports. The A64 serves York and the coast, the A63 drops into Hull, and the A19 covers the Vale of York. Only the Dales and the North York Moors take you off fast roads for long.

Site access
The Dales and the North York Moors bring the usual upland constraints — narrow lanes, tight gateways and soft verges after rain. Most of the rest of the region is flat, well roaded and straightforward for a 40ft artic.
A loaded 40ft container arrives on an articulated lorry. In the UK an artic runs to a maximum of 44 tonnes gross and is around 16.5 metres long, so it needs firm, reasonably level ground, room to turn, and space clear of overhead cables and branches for the offload. A 10ft or 20ft unit is considerably more forgiving. Our guide to delivery access, craning and ground preparation sets out what to check. Planning permission in Yorkshire and the Humber
Planning control in England sits with your local planning authority. The Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks are separate planning authorities in their own right, and Nidderdale and the Howardian Hills are National Landscapes (formerly AONBs). York’s historic core and the Pennine conservation areas are the other places to check before ordering.
