The North East is well served for container movements because it has real deep-water capacity of its own. Teesport and the Port of Tyne both handle containers directly, which means boxes arriving in the region have often not had to cross the country by road first. The run north is almost entirely A1(M) and A19, which is about as uncomplicated as UK container haulage gets.

Teesport is the largest of these for container traffic and has substantial dedicated handling capacity. The Port of Tyne serves Tyneside directly. Between them they give the region something much of inland England lacks — a genuine local option rather than dependence on the southern deep-sea ports.

Site access
Rural Northumberland and the North Pennines are the parts of this region where access needs checking in advance — upland farm tracks and narrow bridges are the usual constraints. Urban Tyneside and Teesside deliveries are generally straightforward provided there is somewhere for a 40ft artic to stop legally while it offloads.
A loaded 40ft container arrives on an articulated lorry. It needs firm, reasonably level ground, room for the vehicle to turn and space clear of overhead cables and branches for the offload.
