What “used” means on a reefer
With a refrigerated container, condition is really two separate questions: the box and the machine. Cosmetically these units carry the paint, patch repairs and scuffs of commercial service. Mechanically, every one is put through a full Pre-Trip Inspection before it leaves us, so the compressor, controller, fans and defrost cycle have all been run and verified. That is the difference between a used reefer and a gamble — you are buying a tested machine in a cosmetically honest shell, at a fraction of the cost of a one-trip unit.
- Confirm your power supply first — reefer machinery generally needs three-phase
- Leave clearance at the machinery end for airflow and future servicing
- Place on level ground so the T-bar floor drains and the door gaskets seat evenly
- Pre-cool the box before loading; a reefer holds temperature rather than pulling down a warm load
Our container condition guide covers how grading works across our stock. For a late-model machine instead, see the 2021 Thermo King 20ft reefer; for single-phase power, the 20ft mobile cold storage freezer/cooler runs on 220V. Full specifications for both working and non-operational units are set out on the 20ft refrigerated containers page, and the whole range sits under reefer containers.
