Where work happens and where people can sleep are often two different places. On remote mine and construction sites there is frequently no rental market at all, and in boom towns there is one but nothing available in it. Container accommodation puts beds where the job is, and takes them away again when the job ends.

Two broad approaches. A partitioned sleeping unit uses the space efficiently for crews who already have separate washing and catering facilities on site — a common 20 ft layout runs three rooms sleeping up to six in bunks, and a 40 ft shell takes four rooms sleeping eight. Where people are housed for longer stretches, self-contained units with a kitchenette, living space, sleeping area and en-suite are the better answer, and are what most operators now specify for extended rotations.

The same units work well outside industry. Farms use them for seasonal workers, campgrounds and RV parks use them as competitively priced cabins that can be stacked to get more from a small site, and homeowners use them as guest accommodation, a studio or a place to live during a renovation. Because they are modular, a retreat or a small cluster can be built for considerably less than permanent construction.

Planning a container accommodation project

Three questions shape an accommodation build far more than the choice between a 20 foot and a 40 foot shell: how many people the unit has to sleep, what services (water, waste and power) already exist at the site, and whether the unit will stay put or be relocated between locations. Settle those first and the layout follows.

For single occupancy, guest rooms or a compact site presence, the 10ft accommodation container covers the same brief in a smaller footprint. Where a camp needs shared washing facilities alongside sleeping quarters, accommodation units are commonly paired with container ablution blocks.
