Description

This is a 40ft ex-shipping-line dry van that has kept its paperwork. Cargo-worthy grade means it leaves us wind and watertight with CSC plating current — the difference between a box that can still travel as freight and one destined to sit on the ground for good. Over 40 feet, that certificate is frequently the whole reason for the purchase.

Dimensions

  • External: 12.19 × 2.44 × 2.59 m (40 ft 0 in × 8 ft 0 in × 8 ft 6 in)
  • Internal: 12.00 × 2.35 × 2.39 m (39 ft 4 in × 7 ft 9 in × 7 ft 10 in)
  • Door opening: 2.34 m wide × 2.28 m high (7 ft 8 in × 7 ft 6 in)
  • Tare weight: approximately 3,700 kg

Grade and build

  • Cargo-worthy grade, CSC plate valid for international shipping
  • Genuine ex-shipping-line stock
  • 28 mm marine plywood decking laid over steel cross members
  • Cor-Ten steel shell
  • A pair of locking bars per door leaf
  • Forklift pockets, two to each side
  • Vents fitted
  • Handed over structurally sound, wind and watertight
  • Cosmetically used — dents, scrapes and patch paint come with the grade

Is the CSC plate worth paying for?

Answer that before you spend the difference. A current plate is what allows a box to be loaded and moved as freight, by road, rail or sea. Lose it — an expired survey, or cutting and modification — and the container is grounded permanently. So if there is any realistic chance of the unit travelling with cargo inside it, cargo-worthy keeps that option alive and props up what you get back for it later.

For pure yard storage, it buys you very little. A standard used 40ft is sound, it is dry and it costs less; if the box will never leave the ground it lands on, the survey you are paying for is one you will never call on. We would rather tell you that than sell you the higher grade by default.

Where it earns its keep

  • Bulk on-site storage for stock, materials, machinery and equipment
  • One-way export runs and any shipping load that demands a valid CSC plate
  • Secure long-term yard storage that has to keep the weather out
  • A straight, sound base shell to convert or fit out

Delivery, siting and cover

Delivery is free anywhere in the UK, including Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey, and the price shown is the total payable with no VAT added at checkout. A 40ft unit needs a clear straight approach of roughly 25 m, firm level standing and no low cables over the drop point. Where the site will not allow a tilt-bed to work, HIAB or crane offload can be arranged, agreed in writing before delivery. If the container is destined for onward shipping, set it where a lorry can collect it loaded rather than in a corner it cannot leave.

As cargo-worthy stock it is covered for three months from delivery: wind and watertight, structurally sound, and consistent with the cargo-worthy grade as described in our condition guide, including that the doors operate and seal. Cosmetic condition is excluded — surface dents, scrapes and paint patching are characteristics of the grade rather than faults. Alongside that you have 14 days to change your mind under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, and a separate 30-day right to reject the goods if they are faulty.

Other 40ft options

Stock of this grade turns over, so check what other used 40ft cargo worthy shipping containers we have on the ground. The same grade at half the length is the 20ft cargo-worthy dry van. Drop the plate requirement and a straightforward 40ft used standard storage container normally comes in cheaper. Where cargo worthy sits against wind and watertight is explained in the condition guide, and the full list lives under shipping containers.
