Description

A used 40ft refrigerated shipping container with a retrofitted side personnel door, previously in daily service as a walk-in cooler for produce on a working farm. This is a unit with a known, documented working life rather than an anonymous grade, and the modification is the reason to choose it. A factory reefer only opens at one end, through full-width cargo doors, which is fine for palletised loading and wasteful for a cooler that staff walk into repeatedly through a shift.

Dimensions

  • External: 12.19 × 2.44 × 2.59 m (40 ft × 8 ft × 8 ft 6 in)
  • Cargo door opening: approximately 2.29 m wide × 2.26 m high (7 ft 6 in × 7 ft 5 in)
  • Additional side personnel door, custom cut for walk-in access
  • Internal length is reduced against a dry 40ft because the refrigeration pack occupies the front wall

History and condition

  • Thermo King refrigeration system, fitted five years ago as a newer replacement unit
  • Operated daily for nine years as a produce walk-in cooler
  • Regularly serviced and well maintained throughout that period
  • Disconnected in August of last year while fully functional
  • Guaranteed to be in working condition
  • Requires a three-phase electrical supply

Why the side door changes daily use

Every time the full-width cargo doors open, the cold air in the box falls out and the refrigeration unit has to make it back. On a cooler entered twenty times a shift that is a significant part of the machine’s total run time and a significant part of your electricity bill. The personnel door lets crews step in for individual crates and trays while the main doors stay shut, which holds temperature far more steadily and cuts compressor hours. It also frees up how you site the container: the cargo end can be turned against a wall, a bank or a hedge and the unit still works normally, which often makes a difficult yard layout viable.

Practical considerations before siting

  • Power. Three-phase is required. Confirm the supply at the intended position before delivery is booked
  • Standing history. It was disconnected while fully functional, so plan a service check and a run-up before it re-enters food service
  • Airflow. Leave the T-floor unobstructed, and do not stack produce hard against the evaporator
  • Machine end clearance. Leave working space for servicing and for the condenser to breathe
  • Door orientation. Decide which side the personnel door should face before delivery, because turning a 40ft afterwards is not a small job

Delivery and cover

Delivery is free anywhere in the UK, including Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey, and the price shown is the total payable since no VAT is added at checkout. A 40ft needs a straight approach for an articulated tilt-bed, room to reverse and level, load-bearing ground. The point specific to this unit is orientation: the side door must end up on the side your people will actually use, so agree the final position and which way it faces with us at the point of order. Where a crane or HIAB offload is required, that is agreed in writing before delivery. Supplied wind and watertight, the shell carries three months’ cover on that basis against water ingress and door operation. Alongside it, and separately from each other, you have 14 days to change your mind under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 and 30 days to reject the goods if they are faulty under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

Setting it against the rest of the cold range

What is on offer here is one used machine with a documented history, which makes a side-by-side comparison worth the ten minutes before committing. Where internal cube is the constraint, most buyers end up at the 40ft high cube Carrier ThinLINE reefer. Operations after chilled space short of a full walk-in tend to drop to the 20ft mobile cold storage container. Grading of used reefers is set out in the condition guide; to price this one, request a quote. The full listing sits under reefer containers.
