Description
Used refrigerated shipping containers in 20ft and 40ft, supplied with the refrigeration working and the shell wind and watertight. These are commercially retired units rather than new stock: the paint carries the marks of service and the shell has been repaired where cargo work demanded it. What they are not is a gamble on the machine, because the refrigeration is inspected and run before the unit is sold. That combination — a tested machine in a cosmetically honest box — is why used reefers remain the most cost-effective way into commercial cold storage.
Sizes and dimensions
- 20ft external: 6.06 × 2.44 × 2.90 m (20 ft × 8 ft × 9 ft 6 in), around 28.3 m³ inside
- 40ft external: 12.19 × 2.44 × 2.90 m (40 ft × 8 ft × 9 ft 6 in), around 57.8 m³ inside
- Door opening: approximately 2.34 m wide × 2.58 m high (7 ft 8 in × 8 ft 6 in)
- Internal length is shorter than the shell on both sizes because the machinery pack occupies the front wall
What you get
- Fully operational refrigeration, inspected before sale
- Adjustable temperature setting rather than a fixed factory point
- Stainless steel interior that washes down and resists corrosion
- Insulated envelope holding a stable internal temperature
- Wind and watertight, secure and weatherproof
- Ready to connect and run once the supply is in place
Choosing between 20ft and 40ft
The 20ft is the usual answer where the reefer lives permanently on a yard or behind a kitchen and the load is counted in pallets rather than truckloads. It draws less power and needs less hardstanding, and it can be placed on sites where a 40ft could not be reversed. The 40ft roughly doubles the holding capacity, which is what distributors and growers working to a harvest or a delivery cycle actually need. Either way, plan the electrical supply before the size: a working reefer that cannot be connected is an insulated box.
Who these suit
Farms and packhouses. Restaurants, butchers and food manufacturers needing overflow chilled or frozen space. Distributors covering a seasonal peak. Construction and site operations needing welfare-scale refrigeration. Pharmaceutical and laboratory storage where a stable set point matters more than a new machine.
Delivery and what is covered
Delivery is free anywhere in the UK, including Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey, and the price shown is the total payable because no VAT is added at checkout. Stock is held at depots around the country and comes direct to your site. The 40ft is the more demanding delivery of the two: an articulated tilt-bed needs a straight approach and room to reverse, where a 20ft can usually be placed by a rigid. Where the standing position rules out a tilt-bed, a crane or HIAB offload is agreed in writing before delivery. Supplied wind and watertight, the shell carries three months’ cover on that basis against water ingress and door operation. Your statutory rights sit alongside that and are separate from each other: 14 days to change your mind under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, and 30 days to reject the goods if they are faulty under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
Individual machines
If you want to check the year and make before buying, individual units are listed separately: see the 20ft used reefer containers, the working 40ft Carrier ThinLINE high cube reefer, or the general refrigerated storage container listing. Everything cold is gathered in the reefer container category; for the access a tilt-bed has to have before it can set a reefer down, read our delivery information.
