Description

A Stoughton 40ft insulated container offered as-is, as a practical and affordable base for storage, a workshop conversion or job site use. What makes it worth considering is that the two most expensive parts of turning a container into a usable space are already done: the insulation is fitted, and an electrical connection has been run for lighting or small power. Buying those in afterwards costs more than the gap between this unit and a bare container.

Details

  • Manufacturer: Stoughton
  • Size: 40 ft, standard height (approximately 12.19 × 2.44 m footprint)
  • Condition: sold as-is
  • Insulated interior, helping regulate internal temperature
  • Pre-installed electrical connection, ready for lighting or basic power
  • Steel construction, secure and weather resistant

This is a trailer body, not an ISO sea container

Stoughton build road trailer bodies, so this shell was made for haulage rather than for marine service and container stacking. That distinction has practical consequences worth understanding before you buy. Handling, lifting and stacking arrangements differ from a standard ISO box, and it should not be assumed to be interchangeable with one on a site that handles containers by corner casting. For a static store or a conversion sitting on a prepared base, none of that matters. For an operation that expects to lift and stack it routinely, it matters a great deal, and an ISO unit is the better answer.

Reading an as-is listing

As-is means precisely what it says: the unit transfers as it stands, with no refurbishment, and the price reflects that. It is the right buy if you were converting anyway and expect to cut, weld and re-line the interior to your own specification. It is the wrong buy if you need a sealed, graded box straight off the lorry. Ask us about the specific unit before ordering, and budget for whatever remedial work your intended use implies rather than hoping none is needed.

What makes it worth converting

  • Insulation already in place, which is the single most expensive and time-consuming stage of a conversion
  • An existing electrical connection, saving a fresh supply run for lighting or small power
  • 40 ft of standard-height floor, enough to split into a working area and a store
  • Suited to storage, workspace conversions, job sites and temporary office setups

Delivery and cover

Delivery is free throughout the UK, taking in Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey, and the price shown is the total payable, since no VAT is added at checkout. A 40 ft unit needs a straight approach for an articulated tilt-bed, room to reverse and firm, level, load-bearing ground where it lands. The handling point above applies here too: because this is a trailer body rather than an ISO container, the offload method needs to be settled specifically rather than assumed, so tell us the standing position and the access when you order. Where a crane or HIAB offload is required, that is agreed in writing before delivery. Because this unit is sold as-is, no warranty term attaches to it. Your statutory rights are unaffected and remain separate from each other: 14 days to change your mind under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, and 30 days to reject the goods if they are faulty under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

Graded alternatives

Our container condition guide explains how graded stock differs from as-is stock. Want a graded insulated unit instead? Start with the overview on our insulated containers page, then work through the insulated container range. Where insulation is not essential at all, two straightforward alternatives at this length are the 40ft used shipping container and the clean used 40ft shipping container.
