Description

A used 20ft open top container. The fixed corrugated roof is replaced by removable bows under a weatherproof tarpaulin, and that single substitution rewrites the loading geometry. Rather than forcing every item through a door opening 2.34 m wide and 2.28 m high, you lower the load in vertically with a crane — the default answer for machinery and crated plant that cannot be driven, rolled or forked through a doorway. The header above the door also swings clear, so lengthy items can be fed in end-on, which helps where a load is too long to drop from above but too tall for a standard door.

The bows are structural, not optional

This is the point most often missed on an open top. The bows and the tarpaulin are not weather protection bolted onto a complete container — they contribute to the structural rigidity of the unit and must be fitted when it travels. Keep them with the container rather than discarding them once it is in position, because a shipped open top without its bows is not a legal or a safe load. The related consequence is that an open top does not stay open once loaded: the sheet has to close over the cargo. If your load stands proud of the top rail, an open top is the wrong unit and you need a flat rack.

Points to confirm before you buy

• Overheight loads. If the cargo will not go under the tarpaulin at all, specify a flat rack instead
• Crane access. Overhead loading only helps if the standing position gives a clear lift path. Check it before delivery is arranged
• Used condition. This is a pre-owned shipping unit: expect surface marking, previous repairs and paint in more than one shade, consistent with cargo service

Delivery and cover

Delivery is free across the UK mainland and to Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey, and the price shown is the total payable because no VAT is added at checkout. At 2,300 kg empty this is a light unit for its size and a straightforward tilt-bed delivery onto level, load-bearing ground, needing roughly twice the container’s length as a clear approach. One point specific to an open top: if you intend to crane cargo in, the lift path matters as much as the delivery access, so plan both together rather than discovering the problem on loading day. Where the position calls for a crane or HIAB offload of the container itself, that is agreed in writing before delivery. As a used unit supplied wind and watertight, it carries three months’ cover against water ingress and door operation. Separately from that you have 14 days to change your mind under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, and a distinct 30-day right to reject the goods if they are faulty under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
