Description
A 40ft x 8ft open top container, available new or used. In place of the conventional corrugated steel roof it carries removable bows and a weatherproof tarpaulin secured with ropes, which simplifies loading enormously: cargo goes in by crane from above rather than having to negotiate a door opening. The door header above the doors can also be swung round or removed, so the container will take a long load fed in from the end as well as a bulky one dropped in from the top. For moving machinery, it is the standard specification.

Does the load actually need 40 feet?
It is worth asking before committing, because the 40ft is materially harder to place than its shorter sibling. At 12.19 m it needs an articulated vehicle, a straight approach and a yard that can accept the turn, and the 4,050 kg tare is nearly double the 20ft. If the cargo is heavy rather than long, you will often hit the payload limit well before you fill the length, and a 20ft would have done the job on a site that is far easier to deliver to. Where the 40ft is genuinely right is a long machinery run, a series of crated assemblies, or anything that has to travel as one consignment.
Bows, tarpaulin and overheight loads
The container must be shipped with the bows and the tarpaulin fitted, because they contribute to the structural strength of the unit as well as covering the load. That also means an open top does not remain open once it is loaded and sheeted. If your machinery stands above the top rail and will not go under the tarpaulin, you need a flat rack, which has no roof structure at all. Establishing that before you order saves a wasted delivery.

Delivery is free anywhere in the UK, including Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey, and the price shown is the total payable, with no VAT added at checkout. A 40ft goes in on an articulated tilt-bed, so plan a straight approach, room to reverse and firm level ground where it lands. Because this unit is likely to be loaded by crane after placement, think about the lift path and the standing position together: a container sited tight against a building may be perfectly accessible for delivery and useless for overhead loading. Where a crane or HIAB offload of the container itself is required, that is agreed in writing before delivery. Cover follows the condition you buy: a new unit carries 12 months against structural defects and water ingress, while a used unit supplied wind and watertight carries three months against water ingress and door operation. Separately from either, you have 14 days to change your mind under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 and a distinct 30-day right to reject faulty goods under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

Crane loading works exactly the same way on the 20ft used open top container, which halves the footprint and drops into a constrained site far more easily. Dense bulk — ore, sand, concentrates — is better handled by an open top half height container, whose reduced side walls give a lower centre of gravity and much easier discharge.
