Description

A used 40ft high cube refrigerated container with fully operational machinery, tested and pre-tripped so it runs from the moment it is connected. This is the straightforward proposition in the reefer range: a working commercial cold store, in a shell that has done cargo service and is priced for it. The 9 ft 6 in high cube profile matters more on a reefer than people expect, because the machinery pack and the ducted ceiling both eat into internal height, and the extra 305 mm is often what keeps a three-high pallet stack viable.

Dimensions

  • External: 12.19 × 2.44 × 2.90 m (40 ft × 8 ft × 9 ft 6 in high cube)
  • Door opening: approximately 2.34 m wide × 2.58 m high (7 ft 8 in × 8 ft 6 in)
  • Internal length is reduced against a dry 40ft because the refrigeration pack occupies the front wall

Condition and specification

  • Refrigeration unit fully operational, tested and ready to run
  • Wind and watertight throughout, protecting contents from weather
  • Stainless steel interior walls: hygienic, durable and easy to clean down
  • Aluminium T-track flooring for airflow beneath the load and even weight distribution
  • Insulated throughout for efficient temperature holding
  • Secure double doors for loading and unloading
  • Used condition: expect the paint, marks and previous repairs of commercial service

Working machine or insulated shell?

This is the question worth settling before price. A working unit is the right buy when you genuinely need to create and hold a temperature: food, floral stock, pharmaceuticals, sensitive equipment, anything with a cold chain to satisfy. If what you actually want is the insulation and the sealed shell — a temperature-buffered dry store, or a base for a conversion — then a non-working reefer delivers that for considerably less money, with no power supply to arrange, no compressor to service and nothing to fail. A surprising proportion of enquiries for working reefers are better answered by the non-working version.

Typical use

Food storage and overflow chilled capacity. Floral inventory through a peak. Pharmaceutical and laboratory holding. Temperature-sensitive equipment and test stock. Static site cold storage where a building would need planning consent and a construction programme.

Delivery and cover

Delivery is free UK-wide, including Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey, and the price shown is the whole of it, since no VAT is added at checkout. Plan the access for a 12.19 metre articulated tilt-bed: a straight run in, room to reverse, and firm level ground where it lands. Check overhead clearance against the 2.90 metre high cube height on the approach as well as at the standing position, since cables and low branches catch out more deliveries than gateway width does. Where a crane or HIAB offload is needed instead, that is agreed in writing before delivery. Have the three-phase supply commissioned first. Supplied wind and watertight, the shell carries three months’ cover against water ingress and door operation. Separately, you have 14 days to change your mind under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, and a distinct 30-day right to reject the goods if they are faulty under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

Compare

Where the insulated shell is the whole requirement, a non-working 40ft reefer container supplies it for less money. Deep-freeze duty rather than chilled holding points instead at the 40ft freezer reefer rated to -40 °C, and a constrained site is usually happier with the 20ft used reefer containers. Cold storage stock of every kind is listed under reefer containers; how used refrigerated units are graded is set out in the condition guide.
